Delhi to Amritsar is our most-booked route, and for good reason. Whether you've just landed at Delhi Airport or you're travelling from a hotel in the city, a taxi takes you door to door — straight to the Golden Temple or your home — without changing trains or waiting at bus stands.
Here's what the drive looks like.
The route at a glance
- Distance: about 460 km
- Driving time: 7–8 hours
- Road: NH-44 (Grand Trunk Road) all the way
- Tolls: about ₹700
- Usual stops: Murthal, Karnal, Ambala, Ludhiana
The road runs north from Delhi through Haryana into Punjab, passing Karnal and Ambala, then Ludhiana and Jalandhar before reaching Amritsar.
When to leave
The time you leave Delhi makes the biggest difference to the journey.
- Early morning (5–7 AM): our favourite. You clear Delhi before the traffic builds and arrive in Amritsar by mid-afternoon.
- Overnight: good if you're landing late at Delhi Airport and want to wake up in Punjab. We always send a rested driver for night drives.
- Late morning or afternoon: possible, but Delhi traffic can add an hour or more on the way out.
Where to stop
Murthal is the classic first stop, about an hour from Delhi, famous for its dhabas and stuffed parathas. Most families stop again around Ambala or Ludhiana for tea and a break. On a 7–8 hour drive, two stops is about right.

Dropping at the Golden Temple
The old city around the Golden Temple has narrow lanes, and many taxis will only drop you on the outskirts. Our drivers know the area and will take you to the Golden Temple parking, the Heritage Walk, or your hotel nearby.
Adding Wagah Border
A popular plan is Delhi → Golden Temple → Wagah Border on the same trip. To make the Beating Retreat ceremony, aim to reach Wagah by 4 PM. The ceremony starts around 5 PM in winter and 6 PM in summer, so an early start from Delhi is essential. Tell us when you book and we'll plan the timings.
Going further
Amritsar is also a good base for day trips to Pathankot, Kartarpur and Anandpur Sahib. We can add them to your trip or arrange an Amritsar-based driver for the next day.
Flying into Amritsar instead?
Some travellers fly into Amritsar's Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport instead of Delhi and skip the long drive altogether. We pick up there too — see Amritsar Airport taxi.
